abstract The present invention provides systems and methods for analyzing blood or other fluid sample, for example to perform a blood coagulation test. The systems and methods use bi-directional magnetic forces to push or pull a magnetic washer (46) along an upright (48) into a fluid sample chamber (32) both before and after initiation coagulation. The magnetic washer (46) can be threadably connected to the upright (48). In other embodiments, the chamber (32) is configured such that the magnetic washer (46) does not rotate but slides only along the post (48). Once a clot (C) has been detected, the washer (46) can be moved up or down to apply a compressive force or stress in the clot (C), as desired, in order to evaluate elastic properties or clot firmness (C).
