abstract The present invention relates to a fluorinated ether compound, which can be advantageously used as a lubricating material for a magnetic recording medium, the lubricating material being capable of forming a lubricant layer having excellent chemical resistance and excellent abrasion resistance even at low thickness. The fluorinated ether compound is characterized as represented by formula (1). R 1 -R 2 -CH 2 -R 3 -CH 2 -R 4 -R 5 (1). In formula (1), R 3 is a perfluoropolyether chain. R 2 and R 4 are divalent linking groups each having a polar group, and may be the same or different. R 1 and R 5 are end groups linked to R 2 or R 4 , and may be the same or different. At least one of R 1 and R 5 is a group in which one or more hydrogen atoms in a C 1 -C 8 organic group is substituted by a cyano group.
