abstract The present invention relates to a process and a catalyst for forming higher alcohols from lower alcohol feedstocks. In one application a highly selective and stable copper pseudo-atom-single supported on a MgO-Al 2 O 3 catalyst is provided, which provides for the condensation of ethanol into higher alcohols at ~ 50% yields and selectivity. 85% demonstrated with stable catalyst life over 500 hours in a continuous flow system. In some applications a Guerbet condensation process is furthermore used to produce an alcohol greater than about 90% selectivity.
