abstract The invention relates to a method and systems for the independent production of hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO), the process comprising: (a) decomposing a hydrocarbon by (i) introducing a light gaseous hydrocarbon feed stream in a decomposition reactor having a hydrocarbon decomposition catalyst under non-oxidizing conditions; (ii) contacting the light gaseous hydrocarbon feed stream with the catalyst decomposition at a temperature of 500 to 800 ° C, formation of H2 and a carbonized catalyst, and (iii) collection of the product H2; and (b) contacting the carbonized decomposition catalyst with carbon dioxide (CO2) gas, producing the gaseous CO and regenerating the hydrocarbon decomposition catalyst.
