abstract The present invention relates to a surface treatment method capable of improving the antibacterial properties of copper or a copper alloy and of increasing the rate of antibacterial action at a surface of copper or copper alloy . This method of surface treatment of copper or copper alloy is characterized in that it comprises a step of preparing a reducing agent solution which contains an in vivo reducing agent and a step of treating copper or copper. a copper alloy with the reducing agent solution. The present invention also relates to a surface treatment liquid for sterilizing copper or a copper alloy, the liquid being characterized in that it contains the reducing agent in vivo. The present invention also relates to a sterilization process which is characterized by placing the copper or copper alloy which has been treated using the surface treatment method in contact with a surface of a target in such a way that to sterilize the surface of the target.
