abstract The invention relates to a method for the oral treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease using a quantity of non-peptidyl growth hormone secretagogues for: the prophylaxis of atherosclerosis and hypercholesterolemia, preventing the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease; treatment of pre-existing atherosclerosis or hypercholesterolemia; reducing the total cholesterol level in the blood plasma of the patient's blood; and the expression of genes involved in cellular cholesterol efflux. The amount of non-peptidyl growth hormone secretagogues is administered orally to the patient. The amount of non-peptidyl growth hormone secretagogues is selected from the group consisting of ibutamoren mesylate, capromorelin, tabimorelin, and combinations thereof.
