abstract The invention relates to a method for operating a sensor (10) which has a sensor element (12) with a pump cell (36) and a Nernst cell (40). A Nernst voltage (U vs ) of the Nernst cell (40) is regulated; a measurement signal of the sensor element (12) is ascertained on the basis of a pump current (IP); a compensation variable is determined by processing the signal; at least one corrected measurement signal is determined from the measurement signal and the compensation variable; the property of the measured gas in the measurement gas chamber is determined from the corrected measurement signal; the compensation variable at least partly depends on the pump current (I P ) and a voltage (U P ) applied to the pump cell (36); the processing of the signal in order to determine the compensation variable includes a low-pass filtering process of the pump current (I P ) and the voltage applied (U P ) to the pump cell (36) by means of a low-pass filter (64); and a time constant (τ) and/or an amplification factor (G) of the low-pass filter (64) is controlled depending on the voltage (U P ) applied to the pump cell (36) or a component (dU P ) of the applied voltage (U P ) which changes over time.
