abstract An actuator comprises an electroactive material disposed in a gap between electrodes. The electroactive material is capable of deforming in response to an electrical stimulus such that the gap narrows towards a minimum electrode spacing. The electroactive material comprises an electroactive polymer having a first Young's modulus, and particles dispersed in the electroactive polymer. The particles have a second Young's modulus which is higher than the first Young's modulus, and occupy a volume fraction in a range of 13-35% of the electroactive material. The particles determine the minimum electrode spacing.
