abstract Provided is a lubricant for a magnetic recording medium, the lubricant being able to form a lubricating layer having excellent adhesion to a protective layer. The lubricant for a magnetic recording medium contains a fluorinated ether compound in which a group having an ethylenic carbon-carbon double bond is disposed at one or both terminals of a perfluoroalkyl polyether chain. It is preferable for the group having an ethylenic carbon-carbon double bond to be disposed at one terminal of the perfluoroalkyl polyether chain and for a hydroxyl group to be disposed at the other terminal. It is preferable for the lubricant to contain a compound which has one or a plurality of one or more types of functional group selected from among hydroxyl groups, amino groups, amido groups and carboxyl groups at one or both terminals of a perfluoroalkyl polyether chain.
