abstract A medical probe assembly for surgical and/or diagnostic use and a minimally invasive surgery instrument having a probe assembly is disclosed. The probe assembly has a rigid probe head, a light source and an optical fiber operatively connected to receive light from the light source and is coupled to the probe head for delivering light to the probe head. The light source comprises a laser diode. The probe head has a length and a maximal probe head dimension perpendicular to the probe length of up to about 2 mm and includes a beam collimating arrangement and a diffractive optic element (DOE). The beam collimating arrangement delivers beam expanded and collimated light to the DOE. The DOE is configured for structuring and emitting a structured light beam with a light intensity distribution forming a light pattern in image plan.
