titleOfInvention Method of determining the physical characteristics of a homogeneous medium and its boundaries
abstract A harmonic wave representing an oscillation of a physical magnitude along one direction of propagation in a homogeneous medium is recorded using sensors arranged equidistantly at at least five points along the direction of propagation of the oscillation. The output signals of said sensors are converted into complex spectral amplitudes corresponding to the frequency decomposition of the output signals. A model of the propagation of the harmonic wave in the homogeneous medium is created, in which, for each oscillation frequency, the wave is represented in the form of exponentially damped descending and ascending harmonic waves propagating in opposite directions. The absolute values of the complex spectral amplitudes of the sensor output signals on each frequency are used as source data for equations comparing the absolute values of the complex amplitudes with the wave propagation model created. Solving the resulting equations makes it possible to determine the complete complex amplitudes of the descending and ascending waves and the complex propagation constant of the oscillations on each frequency; the characteristics of the boundaries of the homogeneous medium are determined on the basis of the ratio of the complex amplitudes of the descending and ascending waves, and the characteristics of the homogeneous medium are determined on the basis of the phase velocity and the damping coefficient of the wave.
