[Problem] To provide: a positive electrode active material that makes it possible to achieve a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery that has high energy density; a nickel manganese composite hydroxide that is a suitable precursor for the positive electrode active material; and production methods that make it possible to produce the positive electrode active material and the nickel manganese composite hydroxide easily and on an industrial scale. [Solution] Provided is a nickel manganese composite hydroxide that is represented by general formula (1): Ni x Mn y M z (OH) 2+α . The nickel manganese composite hydroxide is configured from secondary particles that are aggregates of primary particles. The half width of the (001) plane diffraction peak of the nickel manganese composite hydroxide as obtained by X-ray diffraction measurement is 0.10°-0.40°, and the vacuity/density of the nickel manganese composite hydroxide, expressed as [(the area of the voids in the secondary particles/the cross-sectional area of the secondary particles)×100](%), is 0.5%-10%. Also provided is a production method for the nickel manganese composite hydroxide. |
