abstract The present disclosure provides an electrochemical capacitor with at least one electrode that has a micro-porous conductive material and a hierarchically-nanostructured metal oxide region for charge storage. The hierarchically-nanostructured metal oxide region is formed by anodising a surface portion of the conductive material. An electrolyte disposed in contact with at least a portion of the hierarchically-nanostructured metal oxide region. Further, the present disclosure provides a hybrid energy-generation and energy-storage device comprising a photovoltaic cell and an integrated electrochemical capacitor.
