abstract This invention relates to a unique application of a water soluble monounsaturated carboxylic acid/acrylamidoalkane sulfonic acid/ primary copolymerizable comono- mer copolymers, such as, for example, acrylic acid (AA)/2-acrylamido-2- methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS)/sulfonated styrene (SS) random copolymers as synthetic retarders for oil-well cement setting retardation. The set retarder performs well at wide temperatures from below 200 °F up to ultra-high temperature and pressure.
