abstract The present disclosure pertains to a lead storage battery that comprises a battery jar having a cell chamber, an electrode plate group that is provided in the cell chamber and that comprises a separator and a positive plate and a negative plate that are alternately stacked via the separator, and an electrolytic solution housed in the cell chamber. The positive plate and the negative plate, respectively, comprise an electrode material filler portion formed from an electrode material, a collector that supports the electrode material filler portion, and a lug portion provided on an upper peripheral section of the collector. The lug portion of a negative electrode comprises a surface layer including Sn. When setting the total surface area of the electrode material filler portion as S1 and when setting the apparent total volume of the electrode material filler portion as V1, S1/V1 is at least 8.9 cm-1.
