titleOfInvention Electrically controllable optical element made of an optically isotropic liquid, in particular lens, and method for the production thereof on the basis of liquid composites
abstract Electrically controllable optical element made of an optically isotropic liquid, in particular lens, and method for the production thereof on the basis of liquid composites. The prior art has disclosed apparatuses with various configurations using the electro-optic Kerr effect, in particular for modulating light. For a broad industrial application, the very strong temperature dependence of the effect in conjunction with high operating voltages is disadvantageous. In order to configure or produce an electrically controllable optical element in such a way that, on the basis of the electro-optic Kerr effect, a low threshold and operating voltage, a minimized temperature dependence of the effect and a low response time are achieved, the Kerr liquid (K) according to the invention – proceeding from an electrically controllable optical element as per the preamble of patent claim 1 – comprises a mixture of rod-shaped molecules (5) and non-rod-shaped molecules (4) as active composites and the Kerr liquid (K) forms a thin film with an impressable, wide-mesh, anisotropic network (9) between structured and/or planar conductive layers (2) applied to a substrate (1) in a thin-film cell in such a way that, in accordance with the electro-optic Kerr effect, the state of the active composites (4, 5) of the Kerr liquid (K) is isotropic without an electric field in the working temperature region RT and a change in the voltage-induced phase deviation or refractive index deviation of the optical element is produced by an electrically continuous adjustment of the voltage U or by switching the voltage U on/off and the light passes through an electrode interstice perpendicular to the electrodes. The invention lies in the field of electrically controllable optical elements.
