abstract The invention relates to an apparatus for providing at least one first data signal and one second data signal, wherein the first data signal indicates an activity of at least one muscle of a patient relevant to an inspiratory breathing effort, and wherein the second data signal indicates an activity of at least one muscle of a patient relevant to an expiratory breathing effort, wherein the data signals are generated from EMG signals captured by means of surface myography sensors. The apparatus also has a computing unit which is designed to determine an item of respiratory phase information on the basis of a respiratory signal and to check at least one of the electromyography signals or at least one of the demixed signals for detectability of a heart signal component and also to assign the signals to an inspiratory breathing activity and to an expiratory breathing activity of the patient on the basis of the respiratory phase information.
