abstract A method for configuring physical devices of a process control system comprises receiving (50) a user selection of a pair of endpoint devices that are to communicate with each other, for every pair further performing obtaining (52) information about a process control function for the communication, obtaining (54) information about requirements of the process control function on the communication, determining (56) an end-to-end link between based on the communication requirements, where each link comprises the endpoint devices and at least one communication network element, and the communication network element of at least one link is a communication network device, forming (58) a system model comprising the endpoint devices and a communication network comprising the communication network element, determining (60) configurations of the endpoint devices and communication network devices for communicating in the communication network, and providing (62) the configurations for implementation in physical devices of the real process control system.
