abstract We disclose an apparatus, system, and method for controlling a level of a compound in a patient with a combination of a fluid administration device, a sensor and a controller. The sensor detects the level of a compound within the patient and transmits this data relating the controller. The controller controls fluid flow rate to the device. A unit is provided that connects to the device, enabling the device to operate in a "smart device" mode such that the device effectively communicates with the controller. The unit includes a data storage unit for storing digital information identifying the fluid delivery device and/or properties thereof, and a data transmitting unit for electronically transmitting the stored information in the data storage unit to the controller.
