abstract The purpose of the present invention is to provide a cellulose acetate that exhibits excellent hue even when a low-quality pulp is used. This method for producing a cellulose acetate comprises the steps for: (1) crushing wood pulp; (2) performing a pretreatment by bringing the crushed wood pulp into contact with acetic acid; (3) reacting the wood pulp with acetic acid anhydride for acetylation; (4) hydrolyzing a cellulose acetate resulting from the acetylation; and (5) precipitating the cellulose acetate of which the degree of acetyl substitution has been adjusted by the hydrolyzing, wherein the oxygen level within the system for the reaction for the hydrolyzing is maintained at 3% or less during the hydrolysis step (4).
