abstract The invention relates to an improved method for coating a cheese, wherein a coating composition comprising polylactic acid having a number-averaged molecular weight ( M n n ) of at most 50000 g/mol, is applied to a surface of the cheese. The invention also relates to the corresponding coating composition, use thereof for coating cheese and the coated cheeses. It was found that the coating compositions according to the invention are an excellent renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to petrochemical-based coatings such as polyvinyl acetate coatings.
