The present invention addresses the problem of providing: a rubber composition with which it is possible to produce a tire having excellent abrasion resistance and fuel efficiency; and a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition. Provided is a rubber composition containing a diene rubber and a filler, wherein the diene rubber contains at least a styrene-butadiene copolymer, said styrene-butadiene copolymer having a radical generation index that is at most 1.0 and is less than a value Y calculated by formula (1): Y=-0.0186×(SV mass% + vinyl unit mol%)+1.5. |
