abstract The invention is in the field of medical treatments. In particular it provides means and methods for the treatment of neonatal disease. The invention provides means and methods for treating, ameliorating or preventing of inflammation of the gut of a preterm baby. Such disease is multifactorial and among the most frequently and important risk factors is chorioamnionitis in the pregnant female. In particular, the invention relates to the prevention and treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis of the newborn gut. Even more in particular, the invention provides a composition comprising a plant sterol or stanol for use in the treatment, amelioration or prevention of inflammation of the gut of a preterm baby, wherein the composition comprising a plant sterol or stanol is administered to the pregnant female.
