abstract | This invention pertains to derivatives of Calamus ornatus extracts and pure compound derivatives consistent with spirostanol saponins as selective inhibitors of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2). Activation of COX-2 is implicated with intense inflammation and pain, as well as other biological processes such as oncogenesis, angiogenesis and even for bowel movement. Hence, such activity of the compositions against COX-2 makes it a promising anti-inflammatory agent. With its different structure from the traditional COX-2 inhibitors, as well as the use of the source plant as a traditional food source, it is also likely that the invention might be safer to use, acutely or chronically. |
