abstract Provided is a medical material in which the properties inherent in a polyanionic polysaccharide, which is the raw material, are retained, said medical material having a high stability because the use of a chemical crosslinking agent is not needed during manufacturing, and having a strength that is suitable for suturing. This medical material is provided with a reinforcement material and a film section that penetrates into at least a portion of the reinforcement material so as to be integrated therewith. The film section is formed by water-insolubilizing, by means of a treatment liquid containing a first acid anhydride, a film precursor section comprising a raw material containing a water-soluble salt of a first polyanionic polysaccharide. The reinforcement material is either: a woven or nonwoven fabric formed from a biodegradable, absorbent polymeric material; or, a sponge-like or felt-like carrier formed by water-insolubilizing, by means of a treatment liquid containing a second acid anhydride, a raw-material molded body formed from a raw material containing a water-soluble salt of a second polyanionic polysaccharide.
