abstract |
Provided is a vertical alignment liquid crystal display device which transmits a large amount of light and is capable of achieving a higher contrast, and which is free from display unevenness under wet heat conditions. This vertical alignment liquid crystal display device has a configuration wherein: a backlight-side transparent substrate has a color filter; a liquid crystal cell-side optical film of a polarizing plate is composed of a retardation film; the in-plane slow axis of the retardation film is perpendicular to the absorption axis of a polarizer; a liquid crystal cell-side retardation film of a backlight-side polarizing plate has an in-plane retardation Ro within the range of from -10 nm to 10 nm and a thickness-direction retardation Rth within the range of from 0 nm to 40 nm; and a liquid crystal cell-side retardation film of a display surface-side polarizing plate has an in-plane retardation Ro within the range of from 30 nm to 90 nm and a thickness-direction retardation Rth within the range of from 200 nm to 290 nm, and is formed of a cellulose ester film that contains a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound. |
