abstract | Provided are: an environmentally friendly wastewater treatment method for efficiently and economically reducing, to within predetermined ranges, the proportions of sulfide ions (S 2- ), COD substances, BOD substances contained in wastewater generated when producing polyarylene sulfide (PAS); and a method for producing PAS that facilitates the recovery and reuse of resin components in the wastewater. A method for treating wastewater containing sulfur-containing compounds produced in a step for producing PAS, and a method for producing PAS; wherein the wastewater treatment method is provided with a wet oxidation treatment step, and preferably, in addition, a solid-liquid separation step, whereby the concentration of S 2- in wastewater subjected to a wet oxidation treatment is reduced to 30 mg/L or less; the wastewater, which contains sulfur-containing compounds and chiefly contains water, being generated in a PAS production step for polymerizing a sulfur source and a dihalo-aromatic compound under heating in a polar organic solvent, and the wastewater being treated at a temperature of 130-320°C and a pressure of 0.3-20 MPa, preferably under alkaline conditions. |
