abstract Provided is a liquid-crystal composition having at least one of the following properties or having an adequate balance between at least two of the following properties: a high nematic-phase upper-limit temperature, low nematic-phase lower-limit temperature, low viscosity, adequate optical anisotropy, large value of dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity , high stability to ultraviolet light or heat, high elastic constant, etc. Also provided is an AM liquid-crystal display element having a short response time, high voltage-holding ratio, low threshold voltage, high contrast ratio, long life, etc.nThe liquid-crystal composition includes a quencher as an additive ingredient and a specific compound having a large positive value of dielectric anisotropy as a first component. The liquid-crystal display element includes this composition. This composition may contain, as a second component, a specific compound having a high upper-limit temperature or a low viscosity or may contain a specific compound having negative dielectric anisotropy as a third component.
