abstract Methods, systems, and computer readable media for estimating cerebral oxygen metabolism using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are disclosed. In some aspects, a method of estimating cerebral oxygen metabolism includes obtaining, using an MR imaging machine, a mean transit time (MTT) of a contrast agent through brain tissue, obtaining, using the MR imaging machine, a relaxation rate (R2') associated with the brain tissue, and calculating an index of cerebral oxygen metabolism (i-COM) using the MTT and the R2' for estimating the cerebral oxygen metabolism of the brain tissue. In some aspects, a system for estimating cerebral oxygen metabolism includes a processor and a cerebral oxygen metabolism estimating module (COMEM) executed by the processor, The COMEM is configured obtain the MTT and R2' from independent MR images and calculate i-COM to estimate cerebral oxygen metabolism.
