Provided are: a positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which has high initial capacity and excellent cycle characteristics; a simple method for producing this positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries; and the like. A positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which is composed of a lithium nickel cobalt zinc composite oxide represented by general formula (1) Li w Ni 1-x-y-z Co x Zn y M z O 2 (wherein 0.95 ≤ w ≤ 1.10, 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.3, 0.005 ≤ y ≤ 0.08, 0 ≤ z ≤ 0.3, and M represents at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Al, Ti, Mn, Fe and Cu). The lithium nickel cobalt zinc composite oxide is in the form of secondary particles, each of which is composed of aggregated primary particles of a hexagonal lithium-containing composite oxide having a lamellar structure. Zinc oxide is present on at least parts of the surfaces of the primary particles and/or the surfaces of the secondary particles. The crystallite diameter of the (003) plane as determined by X-ray diffraction and Scherrer equation is from 100 nm to 160 nm (inclusive). |
