abstract We describe a method of monitoring the performance of an engine, the method comprising: providing a gas flow from a gaseous output of an engine to be monitored; sensing an electrical charge on particulates in said gas flow using a particulate charge sensor, to provide a sensed charge signal; and processing a waveform said sensed charge signal to determine a performance metric of said engine.
