The present invention relates to: a non-scale-like carbon material having a ratio (I110/I004) of peak intensity (I110) of the (110) plane of graphite crystal and peak intensity (I004) of the (004) plane thereof, obtained by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), of at least 0.1, a mean circularity of 0.95 or less, and a d002 of 0.337 nm or less, wherein the total volume of pores 0.4 µm or less in diameter, measured by the nitrogen gas adsorption method, is 8.0-20.0 µL/g and the carbon material has a specific optical texture; and a method for manufacturing such a non-scale-like carbon material. This carbon material, while maintaining high cycle characteristics, has high capacity, high energy density, and high coulomb efficiency and is suitable for use as a carbon material for a battery electrode that can be used to obtain a low-resistance battery electrode that can be charged and discharged rapidly. |
