abstract The invention relates to an automated method and system for the classification of frozen tuna according to species, said tuna entering a scanning zone on a conveyor belt (22). The system comprises at least one laser emitter (24) for emitting a laser beam (28) onto the tuna (1), image capture means (26) for capturing three-dimensional images of the laser beam (28) projected onto the tuna (1), and data processing means for: detecting the laser beam (28) in each image; obtaining the rough profile (27) of the tuna from the detected laser beam (28); generating a three-dimensional point cloud (29) of the tuna, from the rough profiles obtained (27); breaking down the three-dimensional point cloud (29) into geometric parameters corresponding to measurements and relationships that define the biometrics of the tuna and its species; estimating the tuna species using a decision tree and a comparison of the geometric parameters of the tuna with a series of reference measurements and relationships.
