abstract This invention discloses organic electroluminescent elements that exhibit improved luminous efficacy, ensure sufficient driving stability, and each have a simple structure. This invention also discloses an organic-electroluminescent-element material used in said organic electroluminescent elements. Said organic-electroluminescent-element material comprises a carborane compound that has an indolocarbazole skeleton and one or more carborane groups each bound thereto either directly or via a divalent group. One of the abovementioned organic electroluminescent elements contains said organic-electroluminescent-element material in one or more organic layers that include a light-emitting layer and are provided between a positive electrode and a negative electrode laminated to a substrate. Another of the abovementioned organic electroluminescent elements contains the aforementioned organic-electroluminescent-element material as a host material in a light-emitting layer that also contains a phosphorescent light-emitting dopant.
