abstract A very novel method has been discovered for converting 1,3-disubstituted indolizines into 1,3,7-trisubstituted indolizines of greater structural complexity, which, owing to the strength of conjugation thereof, absorb radiation in the visible spectrum. The type of indolizine obtained is structurally new, has a reddish-orange colouration in the solid state, exhibits a solvatochromic effect, and is obtained selectively in good yields. The main particular feature of this methodology is that the products are prepared by conversion of a single starting material - indolizine - which grows structurally on the basis of itself by means of an acid/basic treatment. Furthermore, the fact that these are new molecular structures and that these are solvatochromic leaves the way open to the possibility of studying potential applications.
