There has been a need for a liquid crystal medium which has stability with respect to heat, light and the like, a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range and an extremely large dielectric anisotropy, and which exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. Meanwhile, there has been a need for various photoelements which can be used in a wide temperature range and have a short response time, a high contrast ratio and a low driving voltage. A liquid crystal composition which contains an achiral component (T) that contains at least one compound (1) represented by formula (1) and a chiral agent, and which exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. (In formula (1), R1 represents, for example, an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms; each of L1, L2 and L3 independently represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom; and Y1 represents, for example, a fluorine atom.) |
