abstract The present invention includes a patterned thin film membrane and a patterned thin film composite membrane. The present invention also includes a method of making and using the patterned membranes of the invention. In certain embodiments, the thin film membrane comprises a first surface and a second surface counterfacing the first surface. In other embodiments, a repeating pattern covers a portion of a working area of the thin film membrane. In yet other embodiments, the periodicity of the repeating pattern is equal to or lower than about 1 micrometer in size. In yet other embodiments, the repeating pattern covers a portion of at least one selected from the group consisting of the first surface and the second surface of the thin film membrane.
