The present invention relates to a rechargeable electrochemical cell comprising at least one cathode (A) comprising at least one electroactive sulfur-containing material, at least one anode (B), and at least one electrolyte composition (C) comprising at least one aprotic organic solvent (c1), at least one alkali metal salt (c2), and at least one redox mediator (c3). The present invention further relates to an alkali metal ion battery comprising at least one re- chargeable electrochemical cell as described above and to a device comprising at least one rechargeable electrochemical cell as described above. The present invention further relates to a process for charging for the first time a newly manufactured rechargeable electrochemical cell initially comprising at least one cathode (A) comprising at least one electroactive sulfur- containing material comprising at least one Li-S-group, at least one anode (B), and at least one electrolyte composition (C) comprising at least one aprotic organic solvent (c1), at least one alkali metal salt (c2), and at least one redox mediator (c3). |
