abstract BBDRlepr-/- rats, wherein chromosome 5 comprises a D5Uwm27 microsatellite marker having a size of 160 base pairs, but not of 175 base pairs, as determined by use of primers according to SEQ ID 25 and SEQ ID 26. These rats spontaneously develop diabetes complications without chemical manipulation already at puberty. Further, they do spontaneously develop vascular complications including cardiovascular and kidney disease, which are evident at already at 6 months of age.
