abstract An electrical meter retrieves measurement data to be made available and classifies each item of data retrieved, as a function of a minimum number of bits to represent said data item. The electrical meter determines, for each class of a predetermined plurality of classes, a number of bits assigned to represent each item of data of said class, as a function of the minimum numbers of bits for respectively representing the data of said class. The electrical meter compresses (S306) each data item retrieved, by representing said data item on a number of bits equal to the number of bits assigned to the class of said data item and by inserting before the compressed data item a predefined prefix associated with said class. The electrical meter includes (S307) in a header, for each class, an item of information representative of the number of bits assigned to represent each data item of said class.
