abstract The invention relates to the compounds of formula I, a kit comprising said compounds, and to the use of said compounds as selective markers for mitochondria. The compounds are designed such that they can be internalised by the living cell, selectively accumulate in the mitochondria, and stain said mitochrondria in preference to other cell organelles. The compounds also have an increased photostability. In addition, the compounds according to the invention can be used in cell cultures, both in primary cultures and cell lines, in living cells or paraformaldehyde-fixed living cells, with the selectivity and staining efficacy thereof being maintained, allowing same be used in real-time visualisation experiments.
