abstract |
According to the present invention, an exhaust purification catalyst and a hydrocarbon supply valve are disposed in an exhaust passage in an internal combustion engine. When the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas flowing into an exhaust purification catalyst is to be made richer, rich control is performed for making the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas expelled out of a combustion chamber richer. Clogging-preventive injection for injecting hydrocarbon from the hydrocarbon supply valve in order to prevent clogging in the hydrocarbon supply valve is performed at injection intervals (∆tCB). The exhaust purification catalyst has the ability to store oxygen. Clogging-preventive injection is performed in short injection intervals (∆tCS) at the start of rich control. |
