abstract A method and apparatus for forming battery active materials is disclosed. A precursor material is exposed to energy in a first energy stage, a second energy stage, and a third energy stage. Each energy stage may expose the material to thermal or non-thermal energy. A precursor material is exposed to energy in the first energy stage to dry the precursor material or partly convert the precursor material. The second energy stage converts particles to battery active material. The third energy stage anneals the battery active material.
