abstract The use of sequestering agents for the controlled release of a surfactant in a hydrocarbon recovery operation, such as the release of oil from subterranean formations, is described. The sequestering agent is a cyclic molecule having a hydrophobic interior and a relatively hydrophilic exterior, and the hydrophobic portion of the surfactant is reversibly received within the hydrophobic interior of the sequestering agent. An example of a sequestering agent is β-cyclodextrin.
