abstract The invention relates to a length measuring device with: a vernier calliper (4), a hollow profile (2), on which the vernier calliper (4) is displaceably mounted externally so that it is capable of being brought into contact with an object to be measured; an inner slide (6), which is displaceably mounted inside the hollow profile (2); a magnet arrangement (5, 7), which couples the vernier calliper (4) and inner slide (6) magnetically; and a display visible in the surrounding space of the hollow profile. The hollow profile (2) has an end wall (40) on at least one end, the inner slide (6) covers the cross-sectional area of the hollow profile (2) to form an acoustic resonator (30) in the interior and the measuring device has a loudspeaker (22) and a microphone (20) in the interior of the acoustic resonator (30) and a control and evaluator unit (9) connected to this to cause the loudspeaker (22) to issue an acoustic pulse, to record the pulse response of the acoustic resonator (30) with the microphone (20), to determine from this the basic frequency (f o ) of the resonator and hence the length of the resonator (30) and the position of the inner slide (6).
