abstract The invention relates mainly to a method for evaluating the compactness of a layer of railway line ballast near a sleeper, characterized in that it comprises at least one step of taking at least two measurements (11, 11a, 11b) of the peak resistance (Qd) of the ballast (13) near one and the same sleeper (10), and a step of calculating the mean value (Qdmoy) of the measurements (11, 11a, 11b) of peak resistance (Qd). The invention also relates to a device for implementing such a method. The invention finally relates to a method for predicting the compaction of the ballast of a railway line track including a step of evaluating the compactness of a ballast near a sleeper.
