abstract The subject embodiments are directed to a wire packaging system for a coil (106) of welding wire defining a bore, the system including a container (102) adapted to receive the coil (106) therein, the container (102) having a base; a wire retainer (1200) having a base portion (1203) adapted to overlie the coil (106), the base portion (1203) defining an aperture (1211 ) adapted to overlie the bore of the coil (106); the base portion (1203) including a first support and a second support (1252) located on opposite sides of the aperture (1211 ); each support (1252) extending upward from the base portion (1203); a hold down assembly (1270) including a restraint (1274) supported near the base of the container (102) and extending upward through the aperture (1211 ) to attach to a hold down member (1272), the hold down member (1272) having first and second ends engageable with the first and second supports (1252) and the restraint (1274) adapted to apply a compressive force to the supports (1252) via attachment of the restraint (1274) to the hold down member (1272). The invention further relates to a wire retainer (1200) and to a method of packaging welding wire in a coil (106).
