abstract | A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention comprises: a first polarizing film (12) and a second polarizing film (14); a twisted alignment mode liquid crystal cell (10) arranged between both the polarizing films (12, 14); a first phase difference film (16) and a second phase difference film (18) arranged between each of the polarizing films (12, 14) and the liquid crystal cell (10); and a backlight unit having a prism sheet (1). The polarizing films (12, 14) have mutually orthogonal transmission axes (12a, 14a). Each of the transmission axes (12a, 14a) of the polarizing films (12, 14) and the rubbing directions (10a, 10b) are arranged in an E-mode relationship or an O-mode relationship. In each of the phase difference films (16, 18), the retardation (Rth(550)) in the thickness direction is set to 120nm ≦ Rth(550) ≦ 220nm while the in-plane retardation (Re(550)) is within a prescribed range in accordance with each mode. The DI value of the liquid crystal cell (10) is no more than 0.000800, and the emission angle dependence for the quantity of the backlight emitted from the backlight unit is set to a prescribed value. |
