abstract The present invention relates to a method of synthesising 2-methylpropane-1,3-diol (MPD) from allyl alcohol (2-propen-1-ol), comprising a first step of hydroformylation of allyl alcohol followed by a second step of reduction of the 2-methyl-3-hydroxypropanaldehyde obtained during the first step; said method can be preceded by a preliminary step of allyl alcohol synthesis by dehydration of glycerol and said dehydration can de direct or indirect. The method according to the invention is characterised by the use of a selective hydroformylation catalyst consisting of a rhodium complex associated with a diphosphine ligand with a specific bite angle less than or equal to 90°, preferably between 75 and 90°.
