abstract The present invention relates to the use of Dendropanax morbifera extract as an agent for preventing and treating benign prostatic hyperplasia. More particularly, the present invention relates to a composition for preventing and treating benign prostatic hyperplasia and to a functional health food for preventing and reducing the effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia, wherein the composition and food comprise, as an active ingredient, Dendropanax morbifera extract or a compound which is isolated from the extract and then purified. According to the present invention, Dendropanax morbifera extract and the compound isolated from the extract have been demonstrated to be capable of effectively preventing and treating benign prostatic hyperplasia through a mechanism for inhibiting the androgen receptor signaling that induces benign prostatic hyperplasia. Therefore, the Dendropanax morbifera extract and the compound isolated from the extract according to the present invention can be effectively used in the production of medicines and functional foods capable of preventing, treating, and reducing the effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
